Anti-vaccine campaigns lead to the biggest measles outbreak in decades in Romania

Romania is experiencing the most lethal measles outbreak in recent decades. More than 8,000 infections and at least 32 deaths, according to El País, these figures are mainly due to the "anti-vaccine" campaigns which have led many parents not to vaccinate their children.

But this alert for "no vaccination" is not happening only in Romania, countries like Italy (of which, unfortunately we have spoken on several occasions) or France, whose vaccination rate has fallen below 95 percent, could pose a serious problem for the rest of the countries of the European Union.

Surrounding the "anti-vaccines"

The case of Romania is especially worrisome, since the weak anti-vaccine movement joins a weakened health system, which has made 95 percent vaccination coverage recommended by WHO It has dropped to 86 percent since 2007, according to data from its national epidemiological center.

But this drop in vaccination rates is not only happening in Romania, and experts have been echoing it for several years. The World Bank published a map long ago where you could see how they had gone decreasing vaccinations for children under 23 months in different countries, until reaching the alarming cases of Italy and Romania.

According to the Medical Drafting newspaper, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) considers that there are still six countries in the European Union that have endemic transmission of measles, and that they are Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania.

But beyond the framework of the European Union, in other places like the United States or on the Australian continent, the anti-vaccine movements are also making a dent. In Australia, vaccination rates dropped to 90% a few years ago, but little by little they are recovering thanks to the measures taken by the Government.

In the United States they have also suffered various measles outbreaks since the year 2000 this disease was eradicated. The last major outbreak took place in Disneyland Park, which led the Californian authorities to demand that parents comply with their children's vaccination schedule in order to enroll them in schools.

And although WHO is not tired of warning about how dangerous it is not to vaccinate the imposition of vaccinating by governments seems to be the only solution to curb this upward trend and that ends the lives of thousands of innocent children

In Italy, from the next 2017-2018 school year, children under six must comply with the vaccination schedule to access nursery schools and nursery schools, a measure that will also be carried out by France and Romania, which has also proposed to fine with 1,000 euros to parents who do not want to vaccinate their children at risk, a measure that, however, is being debated in Parliament because it does not convince everyone.

Non-vaccination can cause death

For the majority, the measles, is a mild but highly contagious viral disease. However, your symptoms may get much worse, or even cause death if people with immune problems get it.

Unfortunately, on more than one occasion we have echoed news in which innocent children of any age, and even babies, have died due to complications from something that could have been avoided with a simple prick.
