Antacids in pregnancy linked to childhood asthma

More than half of women suffer heartburn at some time during pregnancy. While there are natural remedies, many pregnant women choose an antacid medication to relieve it.

It is not to be alarmed, since it is only a first investigation that will continue to be deepened, but it is interesting to know in what sense the new studies are going.

At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, a team of doctors from the Boston Children's Hospital analyzed the data of three Swedish national health registries and concluded that antacids consumed during pregnancy increase the probability of the child suffering from asthma by 51%.

This means that antacids could be a potential risk factor for the development of childhood asthma, but in the blog we have seen that the causes of asthma, the most common disease in childhood, are also closely related to other issues, mostly linked to environmental health and the lifestyle we lead.

Anyway, it is a good occasion to remember that medications during pregnancy should always be indicated by the doctor.

In addition to medications, there are other ways to combat heartburn based on food care. Nor should we rule out natural remedies that can sometimes be very effective in relieving certain discomforts.
