Restricted use of sweeteners and dyes in baby foods

This recently approved measure is one of those that should have been put in place a long time ago because of its daily use and its importance in children's health. Moreover, knowing that some dyes and preservatives are related to behavioral disorders such as hyperactivity, and that in some countries the prohibition has been demanding for some time, I do not know how it has not been effective before.

The European Parliament has approved a new legislation whereby sweeteners, dyes, antioxidants, emulsifying and gelling agents or packaging gases can no longer be added to baby foods.

The approved list, which includes the allowed substances and their maximum levels in food, follows the prohibition of sweeteners and dyes in food for children and babies because of the adverse effects they may have on their organisms.

In addition, a label will warn that products containing certain dyes can cause adverse effects on the activity and attention of children. Specifically, it is about dyes E 110, E 104, E 122, E 129, E 102 and E 124.

These substances will only be authorized when their use is safe, they respond to a technological need, do not mislead the consumer and provide a benefit, it is not too clear which.

In any case, it is welcome news that should be accompanied by an information campaign for the ordinary consumer, so that families are aware of the risks of these additives and can read and understand labels easily.
