Danone under investigation for adulterated milk in China

It is happening in China. The food multinational Danone, through its subsidiary Dumex, is being investigated after having discovered new cases of sick children for possible contaminated milk.

The case has jumped to the media when parents and doctors have immediately suspected powdered milk when the case of an eight-month-old girl who has been diagnosed with kidney stones in Guangzhou, China is detected. The little girl drank, from birth, a powdered milk called Dumex.

Kidney problems may only have been caused by milk or water used in its preparation and although the stones are not large and have not been hospitalized, the alarm has jumped immediately given what happened in the previous months. Samples of the milk powder, distributed by a subsidiary of Danone, but melamine contamination has not been found for now. However, parents require more research to determine the cause of the problem and for further analysis. The Chinese Ministry of Health will expand the research.

Melamine is a chemical used in the production of plastics that, added to powdered milk, deceives protein detectors in quality controls, and in young children it can produce stones, kidney disease and even death.

In China there were deaths of children and a real food and health crisis when, a few months ago, there was massive poisoning by contaminated milk. The case, initially covered by the authorities, ended in a scandal of enormous proportions and convictions, including capital punishment, for those responsible.
