For the option of having a home birth protected by the Spanish Social Security

There has been a significant mobilization of people who claim the option of having a home birth protected by the Spanish Social Security.

More and more women are considering giving birth in their own homes, in fact home delivery has increased 20 percent in the last four years as it has been shown to be a safe option for women with low pregnancies risk.

Many still sound like extravagance or unconsciousness but the proposal aims to catch up with other European countries, such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria or Denmark, where out-of-hospital birth accompanied and attended by health professionals is covered by Health Public

The petition states:

Users of a state health system have the right to be informed of their options and choose freely. We firmly believe that a home birth attended by midwives (WHO 1996) is a safe, economical and healthy option for families that choose it. We ask that the option of being able to give birth in our homes be respected and financed by the state, as it is a real alternative for health, progress, freedom and information, we consider it necessary for professionals and our families. ”

In light of the latest research, home birth is presented as a healthy option when there are no risk factors, since the unnecessary intervention rate is reduced, there is less trauma for the mother and the baby, the score on the Apgar is higher, the use of analgesia is reduced, there is a lower incidence of postpartum depression, a better establishment of breastfeeding and a better recovery for mother and baby.

From Babies and more we support the initiative For the option of having a home birth protected by the Spanish Social Security because we believe that things can and should change in delivery care. It is another option, such as giving birth in a hospital, to which women should have the right to choose.

If you want to join, you have to sign the petition with which you will support a letter (whose text you can read in the same link) that will be sent to the president of the SEGO and to the Minister of Health.
